Learn how business intelligence, KPI dashboards, and trusted data can improve operational visibility and support data-driven decisions.
Start business data analytics with a decision, not a dashboard
Name the decision the analysis should improve, who owns it, and how often it must be made. This keeps business intelligence, KPI dashboards, and data visualization focused on an operational need instead of producing metrics with no clear use.
Agree on measures and data ownership
Define each measure, its source, refresh cadence, and responsible steward. Document missingness, delays, and known limitations so that a clean visual does not create false confidence.
Pair visibility with action
A useful dashboard shows the variance that matters, the threshold for action, and the person or team responsible for responding. Pair leading indicators with outcome measures and establish an escalation path for material changes.
Use AI and predictive methods with controls
Where an organization considers AI or forecasting, specify the intended use, the data and model limits, human review, and a process for monitoring performance. NIST describes its AI Risk Management Framework as a voluntary resource for managing AI risks; organizations should also identify any binding requirements for their context.
Run a bounded pilot
Test one priority decision with representative data, a baseline, and agreed success criteria. Review results with the people who will use them, then improve the process before expanding.
