Google’s current guidance keeps the focus on search fundamentals: crawlable pages, useful original content, clear structure, accurate facts, and a good experience for readers.
Treat SEO and GEO as audience discovery, not a shortcut
Search engine optimization (SEO) supports discovery through search engines. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is a newer industry term for improving the chance that content is cited or surfaced in AI-enabled search experiences. Google’s May 2026 guidance says its established search best practices remain relevant for AI features and rejects the need for special markup or machine-readable files solely to appear in those experiences.
That guidance does not promise inclusion, rankings, citations, traffic, or leads. Search systems change, and eligibility is not the same as visibility. A credible plan focuses on what the organization can control: usefulness, accuracy, discoverability, technical accessibility, and a clear path for interested readers.
Publish original material that demonstrates real expertise
Answer the questions customers and mission partners actually ask. Explain the organization’s process, constraints, decision points, and experience in a way that is specific and useful. Add sources for claims that depend on changing policy, technical standards, or data.
Avoid scaled, repetitive pages written mainly to capture keyword variations. Google’s guidance on generative AI content emphasizes accuracy, quality, and relevance; it warns against generating many pages with little original value. Human subject-matter review matters, especially for federal acquisition, cybersecurity, and regulated topics.
Make the site easy to discover and understand
Use descriptive page titles and headings, crawlable internal links, readable text, and accurate metadata. Keep important information in visible page content rather than relying on image text or hidden interface elements. Make sure images have useful alternative text when they convey information.
Maintain technical foundations: allow appropriate crawling, provide a current sitemap, use secure pages, avoid broken links, and check indexing in Search Console. Structured data can support eligible search features when accurate, but Google says no special schema is required for AI search features.
Measure outcomes with realistic expectations
Track indexed pages, impressions, clicks, qualified visits, and meaningful inquiries. Segment performance by page and device, and use a time range long enough to avoid overreacting to normal volatility. Search Console and analytics can show patterns, not guarantee why every user arrived or whether an AI system used a page.
Review which content brings the right audience and improves decision-making. Refresh articles when facts, policies, sources, or user needs change; do not change dates to suggest an article was updated when its substance was not reviewed.
A practical content review checklist
Before publishing, verify the intended reader and question, confirm claims against primary sources, add original analysis, check the page title and internal links, test the mobile experience, and assign an owner and review trigger. For an article about a changing requirement, record the date checked and point readers to the authoritative source.
The strongest SEO and GEO strategy is a durable publishing practice: be useful, make the evidence visible, keep the site technically accessible, and revise when the subject genuinely changes.
